This whole campaign it’s been, “What happens to the Republican Party after this?” If Trump’s campaign gets R’s both houses, states, and the presidency, they’ll fall in line (why wouldn’t they?).
What do democrats do if they lose? They’ll have lost EVERYTHING, even with the most ‘palatable’ candidate. Centrism will be a complete failure for D’s. Do they double down? Shift left? Shift right? Splinter? How does a party which was GIFTED this election live down a potential loss?
This is early in the night, but I like playing hypotheticals. I may be the devil’s advocate.

Democrats need to stick with charismatic newcomers (Barack Obama, Bill Clinton) and avoid old guard candidates from powerful families (Hillary Clinton)

Considering how quickly the global markets are collapsing, there’s nowhere to run. We hold our ground where we have it and hope that we make it to 2020.

What happens next is very much up to what the hell Trump does in the next two years. So far, he plans to kick 20+ million people off affordable health insurance (my family included), explode the national debt with huge tax cuts to the rich, persecute minorities, enter trade wars with Asia, cozy up to Russian dictators, and create a national police force which will deport 1,000's of Americans. Sounds really fucking peachy to me.

I’m getting kicked off anyways. My governor just tried unilaterally cutting university funding. He was just handed both legislative houses. Maybe my kids will still be covered.

Clinton was never the most palatable candidate. She’d be an entirely capable president, but as a candidate she was and is awful. There’s a reason why despite being the favorite of party insiders, she lost the primary in 2008 to a one term senator, and why this year, despite having the party’s singular mission being to get Clinton through the primary as easily as possible, faced a significant challenge from a cranky old Socialist who isn’t even a member of the party.
All that said, I’m still shocked she’s losing to a man who is a literal Fascist, a man who habitually lies, a man who brags about sexual assault, a man who has never cared about anyone other than himself and his family, a man who embodies at least 6 of the 7 deadly sins (not sure about sloth?), a man who openly admires dictators, and seems to believe the president should be able to rule as one, a man who cavalierly talks about the use of nuclear weapons, a man who’s economic positions are considered disastrous by top economists, and who has openly suggested defaulting on our debts, which would destroy any place for the dollar as the world’s reserve currency along with the tremendous benefits that brings, a man who has been openly bigoted against Hispanics, Muslims, Blacks, and Jews, a man who has been opposed not just by the left, but buy many prominent figures on the right as well.
Hillary Clinton is and has been a bad candidate, but who in their right mind is voting for Trump? Possibly most of the country it seems, which is as scary as the prospect of a Trump presidency.

A valid concern I guess, though I think Bernie could speak to element of the Republican electorate in a way that Clinton couldn’t.

Maybe. I doubt it. Rational thought isn’t real big on uneducated rural voters. If it did they couldn’t vote for a guy who’d stiff them at the first chance.

I find it hard to believe that anythign Trump could do would explode the national debt any more than it has been. 12T in 8 years, and Hilary would be at least the same rate. Those numbers are pretty hard to top.

Which half? If you see something you think is false, I’d be happy to back it with evidence, but none of these things are poorly supported, so I’m not going to go through the whole list.

For starters:
a man who openly admires dictators,
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
a man who has been openly bigoted against Hispanics, Muslims, Blacks, and Jews,
Can you back up either of those? Because the statement that I’ve heard everybody using to back up the dicatator one is about not underestimating them, rather than dismissing them as a “JV team”. And what has he said about Hispanics, blacks, or jews? If you’re referring to the illegals thing, you’re missing Asian and European too, as they make up the majority of illegal aliens.
Also, at least a quarter of those could be attributed to the woman as well. So I’m not sure why you’re confuse, barring willful ignorance.

OK,on the dictator thing, here’s an incomplete list featuring Putin, Assad, Saddam, King Jong Un, and Qaddafi:
On the racism issue, his comments on immigrants coming from Mexico and are well known. Your comment about illegal aliens being mostly from Europe and Asia is manifestly untrue. As of 2012, Mexicans made up 59% of the illegal immigrant population, while the largest single Asian country (the Philippines) was 3%. No European country made the top 10 (countries outside the top 10 contributed 15% total and had less than 1% a piece).
https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/ois_ill_pe_2012_2.pdf
I don’t recall him criticizing immigrants from Europe and Asia (Jeb! was the one who got himself in trouble by talking about anchor babies, and then pivoting to say that Asians were the main problem there).
His animosity to Muslims is also so well documented as to make it pointless to dig up links for you. He’s made it a core component of his campaign.
On the topic of “the blacks” as Trump would put it, even setting aside his legal troubles for refusing to rent to African-Americans in the ‘70s, there’s plenty of examples, though they tend to be more dog-whistley than his attacks on Hispanics and Muslims:

The dictator thing, can’t read it because the video autoplays over the text, but if it’s including the statements I’ve heard about Putin and Kim, again, saying not to underestimate somebody isn’t admiration. The racist thing, Mexican isn’t a race, nor is hispanic or Muslim for that matter. You’re really stretching the definitions of “openly”, I was waiting to start reading about how the aliens told him Trump didn’t like jews.
